Braking systems go through natural wear and tear every time you apply the brakes, meaning there are a number of things that can be affected:

Brake pads are the parts of your brakes which physically provide pressure and friction, which your brake discs use to physically slow down your car. Worn brake pads are often coupled with the screeching noise we traditionally associate with worn brakes so are easily recognisable. Your brake pads and discs will be checked for efficiency during your cars MOT test or your yearly service.

Brake fluid applies hydraulic pressure to the calipers in the system when you press your brake pedal. The pads then work with the brake discs, slowing your car down. It’s recommended by vehicle manufacturers that you have your brake fluid changed at least once every two years to maintain the quality as well as the lifespan of the brakes on your car.

• Brake warning on dashboard
